Carnival is the main festivity in Guinea Bissau. The itinerary in the date of these events in modified. Tribal carnival in the island, display all the sacred Bijagos masks and fetish. Bissau carnival is great mix of Afro-Portuguese traditions. In the afternoon that the carnival goes wild: Along the main avenue “Avenida Amilcar Cabral”, colourful masks from different areas and different “barrio” (neighbourhoods) start their parade: traditional masks, warriors armed with arrows and dressed in a crocodile skin, contemporaneous masks made of papier-mâché, all surrounded by gorgeous women only wearing strings of pearls around their waste… Hours of lively parade, turning this carnival into an unforgettable experience, a real “fiesta popular” combining the Portuguese influence with the cheerful African spirit.
